About the Event
Bring your curiosity and join us for an approximately 1-mile round trip hike to visit the large vernal pool in the field forest in Durham. In early spring the wood frogs thaw out (yes, they do freeze in winter) and return to near-by vernal pools to lay there eggs. We will hike to a large vernal pool and explore around the edges to see what we can find. What we see will depend on the recent weather. There will likely be wood frog eggs and there maybe wood frogs, fairy shrimp, spotted salamanders, etc. Viewing scopes will be available.
Participants are advised to wear boots or old shoes and clothes that are OK to get dirty as there can be muddy areas. If you have polarized sunglasses, please bring them; they are helpful for seeing into the water since there are reflections. To the parents, thank you in advance for helping to keep the children out of the water.
Space is limited, therefore registration is required!
