About the Event

Join Women of the Woods (WoW) for a  2 to 3 hour socially distanced winter hike at the beautiful Rockland Preserve (click here for additional info & a map) in northern Madison. We will enjoy a variety of woodland habitats and Coan pond. The planned route will be determined by the trail conditions. depending whether there is ice or snow.  If trail conditions are good, we will hike ~3 miles. To keep the group small, we are offering this hike on both Wed, March 3 at 1 PM and Th March 4 at 1 PM.  The hike on March 3 will be longer and more challenging than the hike on March 4. Space limited to 10 women per hike. Masks are required for this program.

Please wear sturdy hiking boots (or supportive winter boots) with good tread. Hiking poles or traction devices (e.g. Stabilicers, Yack-tracks, micro spikes) are required (let me know if you want to borrow poles). Gaiters or ankle height boots are advisable to keep snow out of your shoes. In addition to sturdy hiking shoes, please wear non-cotton layers, a functional mask and bring a pack with an extra warm layer (for our sit spot), warm water, a snack and an extra mask (in case yours gets wet & cold). I strongly suggest you dress in non-cotton layers so you can remove layers if you get hot and put them back on when we stop or slow down. Cotton is cold when it is wet, so it is important to wear wool or synthetic clothing in winter to avoid getting chilled.

Women of the Woods is a program of Everyone Outside. In addition to walking, we will take the time to admire the beauty around us, learn a bit about the flora or fauna, do some exercises to connect with the natural world (mostly sitting quietly) and enjoy each other's company. This program is part of our Women of the Woods (WoW) programing and is meant for women or female identifying people only, please.

If you have been to program or two, please consider making a donation to Everyone Outside. Suggested donation $5 to $20 per hike. We depend on donations from people like you to make our programs possible. Click here for more information on ways you can donate to Everyone Outside. Our WoW hikes, our children’s programs and other Everyone Outside activities either have a sliding scale fee structure or are free (with a request for a donation from those who are able). We depend on our supporters to make our programs acessable, regardless of financial need. Your donation is greatly appreciated!

Women of the Woods is supported, in part, by a grant from the Community Foundation of Middlesex County's Sari Rosenbaum Fund for Women and Girls.

Registration required. Directions will be sent to those that register and registrants will be notified via email if the hike is postponed or cancelled due to weather.
