Winter Hiking Information

If it is cold, please dress in non-cotton layers so you can remove layers if you get hot and put them back on when we stop or slow down. Cotton is cold when it is wet, so we strongly recommend wool or synthetic clothing in winter to avoid getting chilled. If there are a few inches of snow, you will need either hiking shoes above the ankle or gaiters so you do not get snow in your boots. It is best to wear hiking boots/shoes with a good tread and not winter boots unless they support your feet (and ankles) well and have good tread. To avoid cold feet on the hike, I recommend that you change into the socks and boots you will wear for the hike once you get to the hike starting location. Your feet will sweat in the car, and your feet will stay warmer if you start out with dry wool (non-cotton) socks and hiking boots. Please feel free to contact the program leader if you have questions.
